The Lunatics is the directorial debut of actor-turned-director Derek Yee, who brilliantly portrays the prejudice and pressure that mental patients suffer.

Stanley Fung plays social worker Fung, who attempts to help the largely marginalized mentally ill, who live and work on the teeming streets of Hong Kong. After watching Fung calm a confused patient who has been threatening patrons of the local marketplace with a meat cleaver, investigative journalist Yip (Deanie Yip), intrigued by Fung’s work, begins to accompany Fung on his rounds. What follows is an unapologetic insight into mental illness issues in Hong Kong.

Growing up together in an orphanage, best friends Hung (Eric Tsang) and Bo (Tsui Hark) share a brotherly bond that’s hard to break. Later in life, when Bo is sent to jail he asks Hung to take care of his two women - his wife Ping (Margaret Li) and his mistress Mimi (Loletta Lee). However, Hung’s loyalty to Bo is tested when he begins to get closer to Mimi and falls in love with her. As Bo is set free from jail and learns of Hung’s deception, he vows to kill his old friend.

The multi-award-winning biopic about the famed 1930s Chinese actress Ruan Ling Yu; Stanley Kwan’s Center Stage firmly put Maggie Cheung on the road to stardom.

In this biopic set during China’s silent movie era, Center Stage details the tragic life of gifted actress Ruan Ling Yu. Ruan entered the film world at the age of 16, and in the short span of nine years made 29 silent movies and became an idol. As she rose to fame, she also rose to infamy with scandals over her private life, eventually leading her to take her own life in 1935.

In addition to the central drama, scenes from actual films starring Ruan Ling Yu are used, with the actors in the biopic occasionally stepping out of character to address the camera - recounting significant facts about the individualsm whose lives they are playing, and the nature of those times in China.

Based on the real life experiences of director Ann Hui, comes a brilliant drama about a daughter’s hidden feelings of resentment and alienation towards her mother.

The story revolves around Hueyin (Maggie Cheung), a student who harbours feelings of contempt towards her mother, a Japanese girl married to a Chinese man at the conclusion of the Sino-Japanese War. As Hueyin returns to Hong Kong from her studies in London, she and her mother begin to fight. Largely due to cultural and societal conflicts with her mother, old memories of Hueyin’s unhappy childhood are revived. Taking a trip back to Japan with her mother, it is only then that Hueyin truly begins to understand her mother’s own feelings of loss and alienation.

All About Ah Long is a touching depiction of the relationship between fathers and sons, and became one of the top ten box-office films in Hong Kong after its release.

Ah Long (Chow Yun Fat) is a single father who works as a lowly construction worker to support and raise his son Porky (Huang Kun Husen). Possessing a strong bond with his son, the two are happy despite their struggles just to get by. Their relationship is soon tested when Sylvia (Sylvia Chang), Porky’s mother, unexpectedly shows up ten years after she and Ah Long parted. Deciding that her son’s situation would be better with her, Sylvia tries to get Porky to come back with her to the States, forcing Ah Long to fight for his relationship with his son.

Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing? not only garnered actor Sun Yue a Golden Horse Award for ‘Best Actor’, but also propelled him to a new height of stardom.

Sun Yue plays a retired soldier who becomes a scrap collector after the war. Finding an abandoned baby girl one morning, he raises her as his own and they create a very happy and warm family for themselves. While she is growing up, it becomes clear that she has an excellent singing voice. By the time she is an adult her talent is discovered, and her growing stardom and new lifestyle precludes visits to her adoptive father and her friends. The situation culminates in a series of tragedies that cause despair amongst the group.

Koko (Olivia Cheng) is a devoted and talented social worker, despite having problems of her own. In her fieldwork toa remote village, she gets to know FatCat (Kent Cheng), a poverty-stricken,mildly retarded man living with his widowed mother. Despite his situation, Fat Cat is very content with his lot in life. Persistently insisting that she can better his situation, Koko’s well intentioned but misguided attempts to improve Fat Cat's life backfire with tragic results. With two wounded souls, Fat Cat and Koko must look to each other to find the strength they need to cope with their fractured lives.
